Blog Post 2

There are many characters that seem to go through traumatic experiences and who let that shape them as characters. Coming of age applies once again to many characters but Dumbledore would be a really good person to discuss but alas we cannot just yet.

Neville is such an interesting character because of the prophecy, his parents being tortured, having to live with his grandmother and not having the socialization skills that seem to come naturally to others. He grows in each book, and it may seem subtle in each book, once he accompanies Harry to the Ministry of Magic then you really get to see him shed the ‘shy’ side and really awaken into the wizard he could be. A good example would be to compare the Neville in Book 1, when he gets picked on, has a toad that he loses on a daily basis, and gets his rememberall stolen; versus the Neville in Book 5 when he goes and fights Death Eaters. He was a character that really shaped how not just the three main characters were growing and maturing but how those around the three were also maturing alongside them. In a way it really shows how everyone grows up together at Hogwarts.

Sirius Black I think is also a good example because of everything that he went through growing up alongside James and Lupin, having a group that was popular and belonging to a pack of sorts. Even with Peter there tagging along they all grew up together. And having to go through the rise of Voldemort, they all were trying to be together to live their lives and bring down evil. He had to go through his best friend dying, leaving an orphan godson; whom he gave up just to seek revenge against Peter whom was also his friend. He then spent years in Azkaban that drove him crazy and held him prison within his own mind. Sirius also ended up with Harry and the family aspect seemed to be coming together and he seemed to be doing right by James and Lily but he was rash and died.
