Neville Longbottom

After reading through the Harry Potter series for the second time I was able to better assess the progression of Neville Longbottom as a character. In the first few books Neville is regarded as a very weak wizard with little skill. He seems to only excel in Herbology class and in all other classes he has trouble with even the simplest of spells. As the series progresses, however, he really begins to come of age and gain some strengths.

In the Order of the Phoenix Harry notes that at the D.A. meetings Neville is one of the hardest workers and is also one of the students who is improving the fastest. This really shows the difference between where Neville started out in the series as the clumsy skill-less wizard but soon began to come of age and progress with great leaps and bounds. His progression can be seen through the fifth book with his O.W.L. results for Defense against the Dark Arts where he received an outstanding.

He also progressed greatly in the categories of courage and heroism throughout the series. In the first book he has his rememberall taken away by Malfoy and does not stand up for himself. By the end of the fifth book, however, Neville is accompanying Harry to the Department of Mysteries and is fighting experienced Death Eaters. In the Half-Blood Prince Neville is also one of the few who fight against the Death Eaters after they had infiltrated Hogwarts and had killed Dumbledore.

Throughout the Series Neville grew greatly as a character and he really became much more courageous and heroic as the series progressed. After reading this series for the second time I really noticed this change and have taken a greater appreciation for the character that Neville Longbottom is.
